September

ABA at the CORVA Southern Jamboree

 Saturday Sunday September 27 ,28

We got up to Quail Canyon at about 7:30 and gave Jim Arbogast of CORVA the $100 worth of raffle prizes donated by ABA. John Oldham arrived as we were getting registered. John and I then went and set up the Barrel Race. It was a little slow in the beginning as everyone was still getting registered and buying tickets. By noon we were very busy with a constant flow of drivers and it was getting pretty hot. The temperature hit 98 and 12% humidity. At about 2:30 there was a large plume of smoke rising from the middle of Hungry Valley at 3:00 it looked like the fire might be getting under control. But at 3:30 it must have jumped the fire lines heavy black smoke again. John and I decided to pick up the barrel race at 4:00, while we were picking up Ed Waldheim got on the PA and announced all events are to close and we must pack up and be on standby for evacuation. The Dinner was canceled and the raffle started at 5:30, right after the raffle was completed the trophies were given out and everyone had to be picked up and gone by 8:00pm. The CORVA Southern Jamboree was over due to the evacuation. Even with leaving early, canceled dinner (hungry people) and no Poker run Sunday there were no complaints, it was still a GREAT event.
