Report by: Wayne Berg
We arrived at 8:30 just as most of the group were leaving for Burro Schmidt's
Tunnel for the clean-up, we got registered in right away and we were off to
Burro Schmidt's Tunnel. We caught up to the line of people just as we turned off
the highway. It was a slow but easy drive up to the tunnel. Boy did this place
need a clean-up, there were mounds of broken glass and cans that were 3 feet
deep. The BLM had 7 dumpsters delivered to the site earlier. As usual for a
Moose Anderson Days cleanup 7 dumpsters was not enough, there was at least
6 old refrigerators. Several people including us decided to walk
through the tunnel, the tunnel is about 1/2 mile long. The tunnel comes out on
the south side of the mountain very high up from the floor of the valley. Back
through the tunnel and then back to Jawbone station for Bar-B-Q lunch courtesy
of the Kern County Sheriff's Dept. After lunch there was the usual raffle. All
participants in the cleanup received a Moose Anderson Tee-Shirt. It was time for
us to head home. About 5 miles down the highway Was the Kern County Sheriff with
the Bar-B-Q trailer pulled over with a overheated engine, so we stopped to see
if he could use any help. So it was back to Jawbone Station with the sheriff's
trailer, After parking it at Jawbone Station we headed home again. The Weather
was perfect making it another great Moose Anderson Clean-up day.
